My Story
I took the long way round to jewellery. If you'd have asked me 10 years ago where I thought I would be today, I'm not sure I would have guessed correctly.
I have sustained myself throughout my life with one creative practice or another, be it dance, art or photography. Im never more satisfied than when I am creating, using my body, hands and imagination.
If I had to try and pinpoint a moment where my interest in jewellery sparked from, I would say that the seeds were sewn during the years I lived in India in my early 20s. At the time I was studying classical Indian temple dance and working as an artist selling drawing, paintings and prints. I marvelled over forearms stacked with brightly coloured bangles, thick silver anklets worn by tribal women, intricate gold Jadau and Kundan sets adorning brides and the carved precious metal talismans housing parchments of prayer carried by Buddhist pilgrims - I was in awe of India itself and the variety, craftsmanship and symbolism of its jewellery. Jewellery and gold smithing has a long, deep and rich heritage in India, jewels are worn by both men and women with pride and in abundance. During my second year in India I lived in a small desert town of Rajasthan, around the corner from my home was the workshop of a family of master jewellers and over time they became like family to me. For the next few years we built a fruitful partnership where by they would make jewellery and I would use my connections in Europe to sell it for them. After almost 5 years in India It was time to come home to England, and while I still worked in partnership selling jewellery from India, I refocused my career studying an MA in Inclusive Community Arts and then spent the next few years working in that world.
It took me almost a decade to find myself in the jewellery trade as a designer and maker. The influence of my time in India and its jewellery aesthetic has long stayed with me, echos of which can be seen in my collections, such as my love for granulation detailing.
I am not a classically trained goldsmith, but with each piece that I make and every collection that I present I am learning to be proud of the 'self taught' title, as this non-traditional path to jewellery has lead me on a rich and colourful journey to where I find myself today.
I believe that Jewellery is more than just a physical embellishment - it celebrates occasions, embodies emotion and encapsulates memories. In a world of fast fashion and ever changing trends I wish to present an offering of timeless jewels - minimal, elegant and a little bit rebellious. I strives to create wearable art that is as unique and edgy as the people they adorn.
